I got a kick out of this one – I thought it deserved its own post. I came home today to find this comment was awaiting approval, it’s in the Amazonian Profit Plan review post – from Dave.
In case you don’t know Dave on a first-name basis, that makes two of us, but I do know when Yolanda (of http://paidinpassive.com and formerly of http://flippachick.com) – Yolanda who was kind enough to do my first interview here – also mentioned this very same “Dave”…well I knew precisely who she was talking about. Read what she said about the Amazonian Profit Plan review.
I want to go all Fox News on this and be “fair and balanced” since I HIGHLY respect this guy – seriously, his blog is what I hope this one will become one day. Having said that, he’s got the HUGEST post on Amazon, he and his “significant other” (who sounds like she kicks his butt online if you read his blog) – regularly make a mad killing on Amazon, etc.
( Well. I take them at their word – why wouldn’t I? )
If you haven’t noticed, when you go to his post on Amazon, he asks you to either donate or shop Amazon through his link – which is where I got the idea to put a “support this blog, shop Amazon through this link” in that hideous blue “click here and shop please” button (and coupon links) in the top right of the blog.
Yeah. This guy’s affected my thinking.
I gave a positive review of the Amazonian Profit Plan, and like everything online I have an affiliate link for it (I generally promote what I like, go figure) – at this point I have an affiliate link for my kids, my wife, everything except my dog.
But here’s where we differ: I don’t see an issue with e-books. Of course, I have only read TWO of them, so I have a high sales resistance.
BUT
Yolanda in her comment mentioned that this ebook, the Amazonian Profit Plan, was meant for newbies in her view – I said that I think that depends on the person. I’m not being modest when I say that Yolanda’s a sharp cookie, and has more experience than I do.
Dave has more experience at this IM thing than either of us.
Yolanda has my respect, even though I do differ with her on this point of whether or not the Amazonian Profit Plan is a waste of money. It’s your investment – and it is $97 – don’t spend it unless you have it.
Personally, I still think it’s a wise investment. Before you buy the book, though, I would hope that you do your due diligence and check out Dave’s crazy long 13k word post on Amazon, and read other blogs, such as Paula and Wanda’s blog (they wrote the book).
It’s definitive. Follow this link for Dave’s How To Make Money With Amazon: An Affiliate Marketing Guide post.
Just for the record – I LOVE that he bothered with commenting, even if it means I won’t sell as many of these books as I can – I’m OK with that.
I want this blog to be profitable – I’ve said that from my “disclaimer” up until now – but what I do not EVER want to do is be the sort of snake oil vendor marketer that makes my stomach turn.
Read Dave’s blog – he’s got a wealth of information there. I think he and I are closer on the issue of what makes our stomach turn (read my “Welcome” and “About” pages): neither of us like the dime-a-dozen IMers that are smarmy sorts nickel and diming here and there – for a crappy PLR spun e-book chock full of yesterday’s digested EzineArticle spun to be “unique.”
I am not “that guy” who wants to cajole you into a sale. I do not want you to buy something unless I actually think it’s worth it – and again, this is where I differ from Dave and Yolanda on this e-book.
Here’s what Dave said on the matter:
Just following the link love ;)
Well, I think I better stay out of this one James. I haven’t read the book so don’t know what it contains.
I don’t have a downer on ebooks in total, just the simple fact that most MMO [Make Money Online] ones are designed to take money from those new to the game who should probably save their money.
If any noob reads Grizz’s blog from start to end then they don’t need anything else, heck even mine has some nuggets buried deep. The whole reason I made my Amazon guide was because it was exactly what I would have liked to have read when I was starting out.
Sure it is great to have a definite plan and if that Amazonian guide you bought does that then I am sure it will have paid for itself quickly. Some people simply like a very focused plan to follow, I know. But give me $100 and I will tell you how to make that back in a couple of days.
All I am really about is telling the folks they don’t need to pay for information to succeed. Personally I would spend that $97 on a massive packet of links from Backlinks Philippines and send them to 5 Hubs for some kick ass keywords.
Oh, bugger, there I go again, I just said I wanted $100 for that information.
Anyway, don’t want to disrupt your sales my man, if people want a strict plan to follow then maybe it is the book for them. But that price is asking a lot and I would expect some kick ass advice in it.
Am I the biggest idiot online for posting this? Maybe – But it’s more important to me that you understand where I’m coming from:
I want to give you the best info out there – I don’t want to “take advantage” of you for a moment.
Maybe getting this ebook is right for you and maybe not. I don’t regret getting it myself, and I would rather pay for information to make a profit than pay for backlinks if I feel it necessary – I have the tools to get my own links (and funny he mentioned Backlinks Philippines – they did good work for me, I’ll follow up on those results soon).
What I do like is having this information in the Amazonian Profit Plan in front of me (which differs in content from Dave’s post, I’m glad I have both).
For you, the reader: you have to make your own mind up. I get excited about something, I write about it here. It isn’t meant as “fluff” (in reference to a recent post on Dave’s blog) – it’s just off the cuff.
Hear me out on this: I think Dave and his MMO advice, like Grizz and others, was spot on – but I don’t regret promoting the Amazonian Profit Plan e-book. I pay for information when I want to learn it quickly – rather than find it out over time, over years of experimenting, etc. – which is what this book (and Dave’s post) represent.
It’s information that is worth paying for, IMHO (so is Dave’s post – and you can, btw, there are links to donate to him or to buy through his Amazon link, which I thought was genius enough to copy).
Thanks to Yolanda and Dave for keepin’ it real. In answer to my own title – “Are EBooks A Waste Of Money?” I would say: it depends.
Sure, you can be in a glut of buying all the information on the planet and do nothing with it, or get your information for free from a guy like Dave or Grizz or Mike Iser, or Sara or Michelle (see my blogroll) – and still do nothing with it.
The information you paid for or the information you get for free means a hill of beans unless you take action. Why do I support these e-books (all two that I’ve ever mentioned)?
A) The information is good – and is what I’m doing firsthand. I’m not a peddler of e-books, I’m a happy customer.
B) I’m lazy. I want it all there, in one spot. I want it organized. Going to a blog in hopes to find information to make money with is hit or miss – just the size of Grizz’s blog is enough to make my head spin.
BUT
Sure it can be done. You can go to the Warrior Forum or Digital Point or wherever – or the blogs in my blog roll and others – and get the information you need to make money online, all for free.
Like I said, I’m lazy. It’s worth $97 to me.
Look, wherever you get your intel, do something with it. Do one thing and do it well. Then learn another and do that well. Or hit 5 different profit centers at once if you can.
It doesn’t matter to me if you pay for it or not – so long as you can afford to. The real question in my mind is, are you going to take action on it? I’ve bought two e-books for making money online, and only two.
The first was John XFactor’s book – it works. I learned how to install a website and do basic SEO from John. I learned article marketing from him…and I’ve been profiting from that one e-book, and will be posting soon about what I do differently to make more money using his system.
The second is this one, which (along with Dave’s post! No, not kiddin’) has changed my business direction:
Buy The Amazonian Profit Plan Here
Last, let me say that I do agree with Dave’s sentiment – that many of these e-books are geared for the newbie, and many of them are. And when I was new, and yes, new to Amazon – I was glad I found a great e-book that showed me the ropes.

Hey Dude, thanks for the links and I think that was a great honest write up.
You also give the best advice anyone trying to make it in this game could possibly have, i.e
“You have to do something with what you learn”.
The absolute main reasons why most people never make more than spare change trying to make money from websites or blogs is that they either give up, don’t work hard enough, or look for the magic formula. There isn’t one.
As my new favorite saying goes:
“Keyword rich post titles, content, and backlink after backlink”
ALL THE REST IS JUST FILLER.
And I am genuinely sorry if I messed with your sales, it was not my intention as I hope I did get across. I think that you did do a genuine review and that you are happy with the product. So many reviews are obvious sales pitches with no genuine opinion and I don’t believe that yours was like that at all.
Now, what shall I write an e-book about? I have obviously blown the chance to sell my guide to making money with Amazon as one ;)

Dave –
I appreciate your follow-up – and I don’t want to edit out comments that are contrary to my view. I didn’t feel your was, I actually think you’re dead-on right, and get a real kick out of your blog.
My favorite was your “interview” with your significant other on making money with HubPages…That was priceless!
Don’t worry about “hurting my sales” as I don’t make sales here to hurt – really, I make more money with other ventures, no worries.
To say you “hurt” my sales assumes I have them to hurt, first off – and secondly – this is the more important part:
I don’t want to be the ebook peddler you and I don’t like. The crappy, free PLR content as a “free download” only to build a list….
Pushing the ebooks just to turn a profit. No dice. So I welcome you coming here (with Yolanda or anyone) to call me out if you feel it necessary – I admire your take on this.
And, crap – I learn from your blog!
JamestheJust on Elance recently posted..Are Ebooks A Waste Of Money
I think I only ever bought one ebook and I kind of regretted it. I won’t mention who’s ebook it was but even though the information in it was spot on and useful it had absolutely nothing in it I haven’t read before.
I’m incredibly lazy but I know that no matter how much you read you won’t make more money. It requires that you actually just get down to it and work(or pay someone else to work for you). Unless your trying to do something really blackhat making money online is really simple(but not easy).
I’d agree – but the technical aspects of the book were good to learn from. I learned how to put up a website with John XFactor’s book and videos (the originals) – that sort of training is priceless, though yes: you can get it free, too!
And what would you know about black hat…? :) (cough! scrapebox what?)
Hi James
I first read a couple of free ebooks from Caroline Middlebrook and Josh Spaulding. I then came across the Google Sniper ebook and found them to be very newbie friendly.
I then started to get to work and started some action. I was looking for some results and came across Mike Iser’s website and then got the XFactor ebook. I was lurking around forums and blogs and picked up a lot of information.
I now have my own method that I have adapted from all the ebooks I have read and I am now trying to be an internet superhero.
So for me as a newbie these ebooks have helped me out big time but the real things I have found out myself after seeing my reults. After taking action and trying out different things. I read your Daniel Tan interview and his thoughts on following blueprints to a tee came to mind. This is something that I have done aswell as evolved from these techniques and methods.
I’m not going to purchase the Amazon book as I see it being like the other’s but spedning more time on the product reviews. I feel that there maybe little nuggets of information for me but I am happy with my WPRobot amazon sites.
I have come across a method where I am using wprobot for amazon sites. I then see the pages with the most amount of traffic and use SEOPressor to do some on page SEO. I then rewrite the post and add my own review. I have found this method to increase my conversion rate.
Anyways going back to ebooks. I think that the ones I have bought are amazing but I have learnt a lot and I’m not really into reading anymore. It’s all about getting your content out and then backlinking.

Blue Ape man – love the avatar -
Spot on – once you have a momentum built up, then go with it – I’ve just recently changed my business model to target Amazon, I was definitely in the market. The widgets suck..
But I wanted to say, about the ebook, it’s actually taught me more than just how to write a review. I’ll come back to it in a later post perhaps, but it taught me another way to look at competition, and a few tricks to building the links to a product. Things I didn’t know off hand, but I don’t spend tons of time in forums or on other blogs.
Centralizing all the information for me was what I needed, and I don’t personally do well with a piecemeal approach, a little here and there – or don’t have the patience for it. I could spend 6 more months putting it all together, OR I could just pay for it and get it all in once place, in one fell swoop.
So, if I made the mistake of saying it’s a book on copywriting (it definitely covers the topic), it’s that and a bag o’ chips, but it sounds like you’ve got your legs under you and you’re running.
I definitely needed someone to coach me with Amazon, so I was in the market to a Tee.
I think the good and bad comments-reviews are great. If I was looking at an eBook that had only positive reviews I would be worried-nothing is that perfect. To be honest If I had the extra money I would buy it right now (Amazonian Profit Plan). I just cannot get enough information!
Hey Josh,
When are you starting your blog?
Kelly recently posted..Finally Home After 8 Weeks and Getting Back to Work!
Yeah, Josh!
Hey James, I’m going to try some of the Amazon stuff myself. I don’t think I need the book as Dave mentioned, mainly because I’ve already learned techniques from books I did buy like George Brown’s and X Factor John’s.
This is my experience so far with Amazon, just to share… I have a site I created for one of my favorite bands at [bandname]cds.com and my rankings have slid up in the last few weeks for the term. The site is filled with amazon, itunes, etc links to buy that band’s music. I’ve sold one lousy mp3 and earned .49 cents.
But guess what? People who ended up on Amazon through my links also bought 3D blue ray players, Nikon fancy SLR lenses, logitech harmony remotes, and more. Since my rankings on that site moved in the last week or so I’ve made $60 on Amazon sales!
Ross recently posted..Google Instant Search Results
Sorry Kelly, I just decided I didn’t want to take the time to keep a blog updated. I’m also not sure I want to tell people what I’m doing right now. There’s also the fact that I’m not really much of a blogger at heart.
But seriously, I’m really jealous that you guys can make money using Amazon and I can’t >_>
Josh, weren’t you listening? BUY THE DAMN BOOK.
Buying the book won’t make Amazon allow citizen’s of Colorado to become affiliates =(
Just buy the book. Buy it. Buy the book, Josh.
(Jedi mind trick working?)
It was a very lame stab at a lamer joke. BUT I laughed when I wrote it.
You might like my post in…oh…2-3 days I dripped it out for. I think (it has some nuggets you might like anyway) – for the next 2 days there’s a cool interview w/a real up and comer, someone who’s got some pretty good tips for Clickbank and IM in general.
And for the record: Amazon isn’t the only place to go – you can still use them for plenty o’ research in writing reviews, etc.
I tried to create sites like Dave describes with CJ but it honestly doesn’t work. For example, I found several good keywords having to do with jewelry and I absolutely couldn’t find a a affiliate program that allowed me to create a single cohesive website. I am also going to create a long term luxury watch website(I already have the domain actually) and I absolutely won’t be able to make this website work without amazon or overstock(neither of which will accept me for the same reason).
For my current make money endeavors I had to switch to something else-so I’m playing around with CPA. Unfortunately I think that ranking that I showed you a while ago in yahoo was a fluke and it hasn’t came back. To be completely honest with you I am more lost right now about how to make money online then I have ever been in the past haha.
I’ve never messed with clickbank so I look forward to the posts(though I see you have already posted one of them and I haven’t read it yet).
Josh,
I remember someone telling you I think it was on Iser’s blog that you can get an LLC in another State, which would allow you to affiliate through Amazon. I bet this would help with adsense also, then you could have multiple accounts!
I was in Colorado for 8 weeks of the summer and it was hard to leave-I feel like I am at home there. If we ever decide to move back I will definitely look into that!
Kelly recently posted..Finally Home After 8 Weeks and Getting Back to Work!
Kelly – sounds like a good idea – would be interested to know if that loophole would work? (Re: the LLC in another state to use the Amazon Associates program.)
Josh – I’d stick with products that are in mega niches, the evergreens:
Business/Financial
Relationships/Romance
Health – especially those items you don’t want to buy in public…
Fitness
Even your luxury items – you can find those affiliates in the Google Affiliate Network, Commission Junction (where I make most of my passive income)…
Ask your questions, though – not just here, but yes, here too – what is it that you’re mixed up about?
Selena – Ditto – I have over 1400 hops and no sales – but they were straight to the sales page using ArticleRanks.
Anton – it gets better, the interview, IMHO. The next installment gets a bit more general, but the truth is you’re killin’ it online, too! I learn a lot your blog.
Josh-what about eBay? That might work too. I applied for them and I was turned down, but I applied with a bad site!
Kelly recently posted..Finally Home After 8 Weeks and Getting Back to Work!
Oh, by the way, Josh:
You mentioned the ranking in Yahoo! that was amiss – it probably has more to do with how Yahoo! is now running on Bing as a search engine (um…so is Facebook…I personally think Bing’s a place to consider for optimization).
So if your ranking in Bing sucked, that would explain it.
That makes perfect sense, I hadn’t even thought of that. I will look into bing optimization. Hopefully it can be gamed as easily as yahoo. Believe it or not, yahoo can actually bring in some pretty nice traffic.
Also, I was thinking about it all day and I decided I am going to take a few keywords I have saved from other projects(infobarrel) that failed and turn them into hubpages. I think I can hit my target easy as long as I actually get them ranking this time.
Kelly, I was also turned down for ebay but I could try again. I also looked into creating an out of state llc but I don’t have the money right now. It may only be a few hundred dollars but I need to talk to a tax lawyer or something to understand all the ramifications of what exactly I’m doing. Its definitely something I want to do down the line, because, like I said, some of my sites simply won’t work without amazon.
Where did you live in Colorado?
Yeah I made the avatar on some Superhero Generator on UGO. My aim is to be the best internet marketing superhero in the universe.
One thing I don’t like about Amazon is the length of the cookies. I was using WPRobot to autopost but I’m going to use the features of the plugin where you can insert amazon products manually when writing a post and concentrate on the quality of the review.
Blue Ape Man recently posted..SEOPressor Bonus – SEOPressor Plugin Bonus Top Rankings
Yes! The cookie length is…yeah. 24 hours I heard/read someplace.
My $4k product on CJ (in profits, it only costs $1995 or something) – has a 4 or 6 month cookie, forget which. But to read about how people are killin’ it on Amazon, it makes sense given they’re a shopping superstore.
I’ll be posting about my first sales on Amazon – I’m killin’ it! Unbelievable. . .(wish I could see your face behind the ape mask when I post it.) And how funny! You must be on the leaderboard – or trying to be – with that ComLuv! We’re technically competitors.
Best of luck to you, with SEOPressor.
